A picture is worth about two bazillion words. Here are a few images of the contrasts of Ghana, not unlike India. We are busy with first day activities. Thank goodness today is a non-teaching day, as I am woefully behind on the academic curriculum.

Every morning I buy fresh, warm bread from the bread seller. I am known for being on my cruiser and still, Toby gets the most attention. “Where is Toby?” We got out to the White Sands fancy dance beach resort–a $150 dollar day with taxi, entrance, and lunch–we had the place to ourselves. It was truly luxurious. The antithesis of bike shopping in industrial Tesano.

Almost everything you do here requires more than one try. Even finding the bread lady in the morning, the water vendor, getting paint–that was a trip–into the beating, stinking heart of Accra–yick. The vendor emptied the equivalent of chocolate milk cans by knocking the dregs out of them and then filling the cans with our desired color. Gasoline went into a used water bottle to help clean the brushes. (the electricity at school keeps turning on and off at the moment). The water in the gullies at the side of the road stank, everyone was everywhere, selling everything, some from the top of their heads, some from stalls. On any give road at a stop light you can buy: water, fruit, peanuts, fried plantain, socks, toys, maps (we bought one of Africa), time cards to increase the minutes on your phone, chocolate, cold soda, grass cutters–freshly slain or smoked (wiki that), rags, cloth, shoes, and stuff I won’t even venture to guess what it is.

We all have fabulous moments and frustrating ones, though Jeff has the majority of frustration with the technology. My department is wonderful–three Ghanian men, an Indian woman, a Southern Belle from Alabama (MM) and me!

Wish us all luck this day as we prepare for our lessons and the girls for mega tons of homework! xo Amy
